In his first public comments on the gun control issue since the attack, Mr Trump blamed the Democrats for not passing legislation when they controlled Congress during the early years of Barack Obama's administration.
The president has not publicly spoken about gun control in the wake of the Parkland attack.
In a tweet late on Saturday, the Republican president accused the Democrats of not acting on gun legislation "when they had both the House & Senate during the Obama Administration.
Mr Trump - and a number of other politicians - have blamed the shooter's mental health.
"Because they didn't want to, and now they just talk!" he wrote, referring to criticism from Democrats following Wednesday's shooting.
In the past, he has pledged to defend the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects people's right to keep and bear arms.
Mr Trump - who on Friday met survivors of the attack - earlier blamed the shooter's mental health.
The president's views on gun control have shifted over time. In recent years, he has pledged to fiercely defend the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects people's right to keep and bear arms.
On Friday, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump met some of the survivors of the school shooting recovering at a hospital, and also thanked first responders at the local sheriff's office.

#ZainabMurderCase Speedy trial and quick justice! BRAVO! Zainab's rapist & murderer sentenced to death 4 times! Hope we can get done with appeals quickly & get this demon hanged!!!
End of Twitter post by @iamhamzaabbasi
Anyone claiming for openly torturing and openly killing or hanging Zainab’s murderer is only hinting that they are not much different from him. Our humanity, decency and laws are all we have, if we lose them we become animals and no different from the criminal.
